How to Send Us a Part for Reverse-Engineering (Step-by-Step)

You've got a part that's cracked, rotted, snapped, or just plain missing — and after weeks of searching, you've come up empty. No NOS, no aftermarket, nothing on the forums. That's usually when people find us.

First: your part doesn't need to be perfect

This is the part people get wrong. You don't need a pristine donor. We can scan and reproduce from:

  • A cracked or broken piece
  • A rusted-through bracket, as long as the basic shape is readable
  • A part that's missing a section, if we can reference the surviving geometry or a photo of a good one
  • Sometimes, if the part isn't overly complicated, scanning isn't even necessary, and we can just build the design straight up in CAD

If you're not sure whether what you've got is good enough, send us a couple of photos first. Most of the time, it is.

Step 1: Tell us what you're looking for

Reach out through the site with:

  • Make, model, and year of the bike
  • What the part is (or what you think it might be — "the bracket that holds the coil on," "this bent tab thing near the side cover," etc.)
  • A photo or two, even a rough one

We'll let you know if it's something we can take on, roughly what it'll cost, and how long it'll take.

Step 2: Pack it up

  • Wrap the part so it won't shift around or get damaged in transit — bubble wrap or an old towel works fine
  • Small parts (brackets, tabs, trim pieces) ship easily in a padded envelope or small box

Step 3: We scan it

Once it arrives, we run it through our 3D scanning process to capture the exact geometry — every curve, mounting hole, and bend. From there we build a clean CAD model, which lets us fix wear damage, close gaps from breakage, and true up anything that's warped over the decades.

Step 4: We fabricate the reproduction

Depending on the part, we have a few options here. From 3D printing with engineering grade materials, to small scale injection molding for a run of replacements or CNC-ing from a solid block of aluminum. We're not guessing at "close enough" — the CAD model is built directly off your part's real dimensions.

Step 5: You get it all back

Your original part ships back to you alongside the new reproduction, so you've always got the source piece for reference or as a spare down the line.

What this is best for

Small-to-mid metal components tend to be the fastest turnaround: brackets, mounts, tabs, trim, and similar hardware. Larger or more complex pieces (bodywork, plastics, multi-part assemblies) are absolutely possible too — just reach out and we'll walk through it together.

Why we do it this way

We started Second Run Fabrication because too many great old bikes end up parked or parted out over one missing piece that nobody thought was worth reproducing. If it's small enough to be forgotten by the aftermarket, there's a good chance we can bring it back.
